British Columbia - Leading the World in Sustainable Agriculture Solutions

Sustainability more than any other discipline is governed by interdisciplinary thinking; sustainability touches everything, and can be applied to almost any problem solving scenario using a broad triple, quadruple or quintuple bottom line lens.

Have you ever wanted to support a community garden? It probably comes with some amazing bragging rights; perhaps its named after you? Maybe songs are written, and park benches sing your praise... well now's your chance. In the City of Etobicoke, Ontario it seems that the local Food Bank has decided week that it can no longer afford to run their large 2700sq community garden because they cannot pay for the water supply.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimate around 70% of all agricultural land is dedicated to farming livestock, and with our ever-growing global population, our demand for beef and other livestock products is set to double by 2050. This is clearly unsustainable and will bring with it a vast increase in the rates of deforestation and water quality degradation through the leaching of manure run-off into our groundwater.

With the global population currently at 7,258,997,0331 and growing, agriculture can easily be considered one of the most, if not THE most, important industry on the planet. In fact, our very lives depend on the food produced by the farmers and ranchers of the world.

May 5 to 11 is International Compost Week, building awareness of composting, and the importance of "feeding the soil."

What better time for Cathy Nesbitt, founder of Cathy's Crawly Composters, to look back on her 12 years of promoting vermicomposting.

Vermicomposting uses red wiggler worms to transform organic waste - from coffee grounds to eggshells and orange peels - into gardener's "black gold," rich compost and worm castings.

Aquaponics – How Integrated Fish and Plant husbandry can be Used to Supplement your Diet and Perhaps Feed the World

I see a world where everyone grows plants without chemicals, the way we Earthlings have done successfully for many thousands of years.

While lining up to buy myself a latte before class, I caught sight of a rather unusual batch of stir sticks made of fettuccine. Without hesitation, I took out my smartphone and snapped a quick picture of it for this blog. The description states that fettuccine stir sticks are "more biodegradable and cost-effective than wooden stir-sticks".
