Blog Post: Green gifts for great Dad's

This weekend marks Fathers Day, an annual celebration commonly involving barbecues, picnics, golfing and also... gifts!

I thought it might be a good idea to take a look at some popular gift ideas for this traditional event, but to do a bit more research and find a greener gift idea.

Stainless Steel Coffee Mug:
They range from about $20-$45, but if your dad drinks as much coffee as mine, it'll save a rainforest of Tim Hortons paper take-out cups!

SIGG Water Bottle:
For $20, your dad can keep his water colder longer, save on plastic waste, and be superstylin'!

Garden Tools:
If your dad has a garden and enjoys the leisurely hobby, this would make a great gift! Growing plants and getting some exercise and sun all at once. You could also get him a tree, vegetable plant or something he can plant right away.

Gift certificates:
From local, organic restaurants and farmer's markets. He can eat healthy, sustainably, and help out the local economy too.

Something special:
There are so many ways to show your dad how much you really care about him without having to buy anything at all. It might be fun to go all out and make him something like your special homemade raspberry jam, or a fruit basket you put together by yourself, or you could even just go out for a nature walk together.

If your family is planning a party, there's a really great story on how to green your celebration. It's mostly common sense: reduce throwaway plates and cups and use your ceramic plates instead! It'll really change the aesthetic of a party if you take the time to get linen cloths instead of paper towels, soy candles for mood lighting and biodegradable balloons to add a splash of colour!
