CABIN SCIENCE FORUM - November 17, 2010
Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre
By Jason Robinson

Last month I attended the first annual CABIN Science Forum being held at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. No I’m not talking about the cabin you and the family use to get away on weekends, CABIN stands for the Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network program, and was developed in response to the need for a standard method everyone could use to determine the health of Canada’s freshwater streams, lakes and rivers.

From the Unpackaged website:

Remember:
Reduce by only buying what you need
Reuse by bringing your containers for a refill
Recycle what you can’t reuse

And… if you can’t reuse or recycle it then don’t buy it!

Human-like gorillas, shy pandas, and hungry lions are some of the animals that can be seen at the San Diego Zoo in California. The zoo is a big attraction for kids and adults alike, evidenced by the vast crowds present year round.

The expedition is over a month away, yet the preparation process is surprisingly time consuming.  I am doing everything from cooking to camera shopping.

This weekend marks Fathers Day, an annual celebration commonly involving barbecues, picnics, golfing and also... gifts!

I thought it might be a good idea to take a look at some popular gift ideas for this traditional event, but to do a bit more research and find a greener gift idea.

Stainless Steel Coffee Mug:
They range from about $20-$45, but if your dad drinks as much coffee as mine, it'll save a rainforest of Tim Hortons paper take-out cups!

On my walk to La Playa Grande, on my first morning of a two week yoga and surf retreat in Montezuma, Costa Rica, I was unpleasantly surprised by the overwhelming amount of trash on the beach. I thought Costa Rica was supposed to be an eco-tourism haven of volcanoes, expansive beaches, and tropical wildlife. I never expected to find a filthy paradise with some of the most beautiful beaches I’d ever seen strewn with plastic bottles and partnerless shoes.

Last summer, I did some volunteer work with Makati City, the central business district in Metro Manila, Philippines. Here are some insights I gained from that experience.

Fast food. Some fast food places in the Philippines now have a "dine-in-on-a-plate" option to decrease the use of styrofoam and cardboard packages.
