Port Moody Receives NEW Gym Flooring Thanks to TSBC Grant
June 12, 2013
Victoria, BC – Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) is pleased to announce the recent completion of Port Moody’s Recreational Centre’s new weight room, thanks in part to a grant that was awarded through TSBC’s Community Grant Program.
The City of Port Moody felt it was important to use an environmentally friendly product for this facility. Mayor Mike Clay, City of Port Moody, says that the project aligns with many of City Council’s strategic priorities. “Environmental stewardship is important to Council, so this project was a good fit for Port Moody,” he said. “It also reflects the use of innovative technology and supports an active and healthy community, both of which are important objectives in our strategic plan.” The grant opportunity also speaks to the City’s objective of financial sustainability.
In addition, the use of recycled rubber in flooring provides safety by cushioning falls and allows people of all ages to fully experience the joy of physical activity, whether in a fitness facility such as this, a playground, an arena or a park.
According to Mayor Clay, patrons at Port Moody’s Recreation Complex are already enjoying the new surface in the weight room: “They tell us it feels much better to work out on the new floor than the previous concrete surface.” The Dinoflex interlocking product also provides more functional space in the room.
Through its Community Grant Program, Tire Stewardship BC awards matching funds of up to $30,000 to not-for-profit organizations, schools, municipalities etc. that use BC recycled rubber in their projects. More than 60 million tires have been recycled in the province since 1991, when the scrap tire-recycling program was launched in BC.
Tire Stewardship BC is still accepting applications for its 2013 Community Grant Program. Applications will be reviewed, processed and grants awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The application period will close on or before December 31, 2013, dependent on available funds.
Applications of recycled BC rubber include:
· Playgrounds – Allows the area to be completely wheelchair accessible, provides safety by cushioning falls, and allows people of all ages to fully experience the joy of physical activity and play.
- Sidewalks and Trails - Provides cushioning support that is more comfortable for walking and jogging. Surfacing is friendly to plant root systems and is water permeable. It is also easily maintained and installed.
- Outdoor Fitness Parks - Rubber pavement cushions fitness station areas and provides residents with easy access.
- Water Parks - Water permeability and a soft surface make BC recycled rubber an excellent choice for spray parks and pools.
- Athletic tracks - Running tracks made from recycled rubber offer significant advantages over other track surfaces, including reduced stress on a runner’s legs.
- Synthetic Turf Fields - Sports fields that use crumb rubber particles as infill material increase the resiliency of the field, resulting in cost-efficient, low-maintenance surfaces that can be used in all weather conditions. The Synthetic Turf Council estimates that the total amount of synthetic turf installed in North America conserves more than three billion gallons of water each year
