Press Release: COHOUSING: HOW TODAY’S SENIORS SUCCESSFULLY AGE IN PLACE
SENIOR COHOUSING: HOW TODAY’S SENIORS SUCCESSFULLY AGE IN PLACE
GET THE TOOLS YOU NEED AT AGING SUCCESSFULLY 2014, THE PREMIER SENIOR COHOUSING FACILITATION WORKSHOP in NEVADA CITY, CA
An Open Invitation from the pioneer in Senior Cohousing in North America, Charles Durrett, to the Workshop for anyone excited about taking a leadership role in creating a senior cohousing community.
As you may know, we have a senior housing crisis in this country. Those seniors
now living in cohousing were lucky enough to figure it out and move into a state-of-the-art community. However, many good seniors are living in single-family houses where they raised their family, but which are not fit for a successful aging scenario, nor for a sustainable future. Too many seniors are left with no other alternative than assisted living. A recent national study contends that 40% of the seniors in assisted care today are prematurely institutionalized. That's what happens when you don't live in a supportive community.
It is also unfortunate that, instead of sitting on one of their front porches discussing the issues of the day or playing a game of Scrabble with their neighbors, the average senior in America is watching over 6 hours of TV per day. That's a lot of humanity left on the table.
We have also built systems and infrastructure to prop up seniors, rather than building communities. For example, Americans drove 5 billion miles last year between taking meals to seniors at home and nurses on the go providing services. For many seniors, that is their only contact with another human during the day. And it is hard on our environment.
The good news is there are seniors who want to be part of designing solutions that enhance their lives. Like a senior at Wolf Creek Lodge Cohousing who tells me that he went from purchasing 5-6 tanks of gas per month to less than one tank of gas per month after he moved into cohousing; likewise, I'm highly motivated to be a part of the solution.
The cohousing concept honors seniors and offers its residents community, security, and a healthy lifestyle that enables them to successfully age-in-place.
We’ll be hosting our senior cohousing development seminar Aging Successfully 2014 at the Nevada City Cohousing Community. This year the syllabus will expand to include topics related to "How to Get Senior Cohousing Moving at a Faster Pace in North America." I think that you can contribute to this conversation.
This 5-day workshop will bring together professionals involved in cohousing and senior cohousing around North America: finances, policy leaders, developers, community organizers, social advocates, and others who are interested in facilitating future workshops with seniors, to help them discover the realities and possibilities of aging in place with cohousing. These folks are motivated to look at the big picture as well as the particulars of budget and the other details involved in getting their specific projects built.
This is the most comprehensive training available to help seniors plan for successful aging and create new senior cohousing communities. Five days of hands-on learning that includes experience, tools, and coaching with the field’s leading experts, including Chuck Durrett (McCamant & Durrett Architects/The Cohousing Company), Kathryn McCamant (Cohousing Partners), and Jim Leach (Wonderland Hill Development Corporation).
This instructional workshop combines experiential learning on the issues of aging and how to create a supportive community, along with the details and logistics of cohousing development, for professionals and others interested in facilitating future workshops with seniors to help them discover the realities and possibilities of aging in place with cohousing.
This is the workshop that has helped launch most successful communities. Honestly, I can't think of a better way to making it happen for you than to come to the workshop in October. Aging Successfully 2014 is your opportunity to reimagine the possibilities of senior housing. Through cohousing, you can be instrumental in creating the vibrant small town community life that today’s seniors truly want.
The cohousing concept honors seniors, and offers its residents community, security, and a healthy lifestyle that enables them to successfully age in place.

We are each other’s stewards. Senior cohousing facilitates the ebb and flow of our living landscape, and allows us to grow old together naturally while surrounded by true friends and neighbors.
This is a call to break free. This is a call to action. Come join us for Aging Successfully 2014 this October 6 – 10, 2014, in Nevada City, California. Find out how you too can create the kind of community that seniors in cohousing enjoy every day, right now.
