Event: Black Bear feeding area - Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve

Date:
Saturday, August 13, 2016 - 10:30 to 13:00
Event Description:

A joint field trip for Nature Vancouver and the North Shore Black Bear Society.

Meeting Location: Main entrance doors of Superstore, 333 Seymour Blvd., North Vancouver for car-pooling which is required because there is very limited parking at the trail-head.

Meeting time: 10:30 am.

Duration & length of walk: 2 to 3 hours.

Trip leader: David Cook 604-924-0147.

Terrain: The trail in LSCR is well-maintained. The trails that we will be using in Lynn Canyon Park are wide and well used but not maintained and have muddy and rooty sections. All trails are moderate terrain with an elevation gain for the day of 50 metres. For those who wish to climb Lookout Hill at the end of the field trip add another 70 metres of elevation gain.

Description of event: The focus will be on the behavior of black bears in their natural environment. You will have an opportunity to learn about the various natural foods preferred by our local black bears in two very different ecosystems; a forested area with a high level of coarse woody debris where bears forage for insects in rotten logs and stumps and an unforested berry-bush area. You will see the plant species foraged by bears and a number of bear signs such as bear-marked trees, excavated rotten logs and a den.

Registration: not required.
